Chanukkah Oh Chanukkah

Last night we celebrated Chanukkah with our usual crowd of friends, half of whom are Jewish it turns out. Thank goodness for Gilda, the organizer, or otherwise Chanukkah would have gone unnoticed to Alan and me. As the Christmas decorations and music are in full swing in Accra, Chanukkah, as you can imagine has come and almost gone without any fan fair. Well, that is mostly due to the fact that many Ghanaians are not quite sure what Judiasm is and they surely have not heard of Chanukkah. That's ok though...last night's celebration made us feel great! Gilda did most of the cooking...latkes (fried potato pancakes), matzo ball soup (wrong holiday but we were craving it), meatballs and sweet potato, and we had some amazing salads from Marina. I made a chocolate mousse cake and all was delicious as usual. We didn't get around to singing any Chanukkah songs but we did light Gilda's menorah and then played the very non-traditional Jewish game of bingo.
