The winter in Lima can definitely be gloomy and depressing. The sky is grey every day and there is a dampness in the air that leaves your hair frizzy and your clothes full of mildew. Thank goodness I have wee little Isaac and big brother Eli to keep me focused on good things! Isaac is growing faster than we can keep up with and we keep putting away clothes he's already grown out of and pulling out the next batch. With the lack of sunshine here and the cold damp air, it's not much fun to take walks with him outside but the second the sky lightens any small amount, we go out with him to take in a little vitamin D.
We have tried to do as Limeans do this winter season and chase the sun. The funny thing about Lima is that no matter how grey and damp gloomyville is, you only have to drive about an hour outside of Lima to find the sun. So many folks here drive out of town on Sundays "to lunch" where they can catch some rays. We've accompanied some of our friends to a few places over the last few weeks...sometimes we find sun and sometimes we find just more grey sky. But either way, we enjoy seeing some new places, trying delicious food, and watching Eli explore all of his new surroundings.
This is a great chicken rotisserie place outside of Lima called the Granja Azul which we've been to a few times. It is all you can eat chicken, french fries, salad, and bread and the best part (apart from their delicious homemade mayo) is the huge playground of toys big and small for kids right outside. Eli tried out a few but ultimately loved playing with the pebbles on the ground.
My mom with her pisco sour!
Brother-in-law, Ari, and his cutie daughter, Martina.
Nephew Yoav making the rounds on the Granja Azul pony.
Another great lunch spot. We didn't find sun here but the food was amazing. I tried a traditional Peruvian dish called Pachamanca. It is basically a whole lot of stuff, chicken, meat, pork, different kinds of potatoes, local veggies, all cooked inside of a leaf in the ground buried with hot stones.
Eli loved the grande chalkboard we he went crazy showing off his artistic skills...
and made some friends along the way.
And most recently, this weekend, we went to the best of all...a beautiful private club in the mountains about an hour and a half outside of Lima. Our friends are members and graciously brought us along. I did not believe that we would find sun since virtually the whole drive there was more gloomy grey but alas, all of a sudden, about 20 minutes from the club, the sky opened and the temp increased and we started shedding layers.
We will most definitely keep chasing the sun on weekends as it is really a little bit of heaven in these dark and gloomy days.
